Windsor and Eton

Post  porrohman on Thu Feb 10, 2011 1:10 am

Sad, sad story of a non league club wound up after over 100 years of playing history. £60,000 HMRC.
This last paragraph sums it up completely for me..

The issue of the moral responsibility of a company to repay its debts and small businesses that cannot afford to be left in the lurch by one that can no longer trade is one thing, but the loss of a club to its community is something else altogether. If football is to mean anything more than an unsightly rush towards the madness that we continue to see, the likes of Windsor & Eton must not be forgotten. Paying off Windor & Eton’s tax bill would have taken less than one week’s worth of Andy Carroll’s newly-plumpened wage packet and paying off the club’s total debts would have taken less than a fortnight’s worth of it. This isn’t meant as a reflection upon Carroll himself, but on a more general state of malaise that needs to be addressed before more clubs like Windsor & Eton find themselves in the same position as the club that died today.

Amen to that!

I can remember visiting Windsor and Eton in those dim and distant days (40 years or so ago) when I regularly followed Dulwich Hamlet (who?!!!) home and away.

Sad to see this happen.

Unfortunately as much as it is not nice to see any football club wound up this is a classic case of continuing to spend money they did not have. The circumstances here were that the club were funded by a few people who have eventually left, they had chance last season to cut the budget they had to live within their means but chased promotion and continued paying out money they did not have or were likely to get to save the club.

When you read the full facts the club only have itself to blame, they had a situation that needed to be dealt with that they made the wrong decision and look where that has got them.

Too many clubs continue pushing out the boat and this is hard evidence that you need to take stock and action to keep your club. Fair play to Redditch to making this decision, is this to late? Only time will tell but lets keep our Fingers (excuse the pun Very Happy) crossed that we do not end up like W&E.
