Nuneaton Town 1-1 Redditch United

Post  fingers on Sun Jan 30, 2011 4:03 am

Redditch rallied to an unexpected yet deserved point at league leaders Nuneaton, and it could have been so much more with two clearcut chances spurned and a late lead lost seven minutes from time as United's evolving side produced a display worthy of equalling the best the Blue Square Bet North has to offer.

The match started at a pedestrian pace, the home side forcing Jimmy Dormand into the first save of the game on 7 minutes, James Armson's dipping half volley comfortably parried away.

United fashioned their first chance after a patient build up, debutant Simon Brown's centre was flicked back across by Matt Smith and Phil Green cut inside Danny Spencer but his prodded effort just rolled wide with the goal at his mercy.

Nuneaton upped their tempo and enjoyed their best spell of the match before half time, going close when Lee Moore cut in from the left and rolled the ball to Armson whose blistering shot was deflected just over via excellent Lee Ayres who didn't miss a trick, his experience will be missed during his three match ban.

Shortly after, Armson found the head of Spencer with an inswinging corner on 27 minutes but Dormand smothered the effort from point blank range with a mass of bodies waiting to pounce.

The pressure continued to grow, Moore's tenacious run played Armson in whose shot was bravely blocked by Shaun Timmins while Simon Forsdick saw his crisp drive tipped onto the post by the in-form Dormand; the Redditch number one was again in action saving twice in a goalmouth scramble from Mark Noon on 37 minutes and United were happy to hear the half time whistle.

The Reds missed another golden opportunity to lead just 2 minutes into the second half, Green latching onto a ball from the right and lofting the ball over the advancing Michael Quirke when one on one, but he cleared the crossbar much to the whole crowd's amazement.

At the other end, Chris Dillon latched onto a long ball and shrugged off Sean Platt but his heavy touch allowed Dormand to claim the ball and with 55 minutes on the clock, a mazy run from Storer ended with a shot over the crossbar as you could sense the frustration building in the home crowd.

Noon, Armson and Storer had tame efforts on goal but the were Reds defending well, stifling the impetus of the hosts.

Dormand again pulled off an instinctive block at Justin Marsden's feet just before Redditch broke and rocked the home side with a well taken goal ten minutes from time; substitute Josh McKenzie rolled a ball from right into the feet of Green whose crisp, fierce strike across Quirke gave the Coventry City loanee no chance.

If there was one small criticim of United's display it would be their vulnerability once they lead; just three minutes after scoring they struggled to clear their lines from a corner, Gareth Dean crossing for Lee Moore to flick over the advancing Dormand, who was caught out positionally for the first time in the game.

The impetus was with Town now with United sitting deep, Gavin Hurren's headed clearance falling to Noon who blazed over from 12 yards and Marsden shanked a shot when again, he should have tested Dormand further.

Redditch might have won this match- it was there for the taking, but the level of performance suggests that elusive win isn't far away for Matt Gardiner's men, with the hope of Blue Square Bet North survival looking a much more realistic prospect.

REDDITCH; Dormand 8, Platt 7, Timmins 7, Dyer 6, AYRES* 9 (c), Hurren 6, Wilding 8, Newbury 6 (Fitzpatrick 75, 7), Smith 6, Green 6 (Edwards 80), Brown 6(McKenzie 59, 7).

Subs; Quaynor, Costello.

Att; 965

Do we know what to do when we take the lead?!?!

I make it 3 out of 4 times we've taken the lead and not gone on to win!

This has to be sorted really, else all we'll do is draw! Head against wall

6 is the staple mark really, some good crosses again crying to be hit by someone, scored a good goal, but those sitters... you could see he was gutted both times. He'll come good again, he's the creative spark in the side.
